Medicare: GP Chronic Condition Management Plan
If your child has a chronic or complex condition, your GP can refer them under a care plan for up to 5 allied health sessions a year. Medicare pays a rebate of $61.80 per session.
You'll receive a receipt after each session. You can then claim your rebate through your Medicare app or website.
Medicare: M10 items
From 1 March 2026, children and young people under 25 who have, or might have, a stutter, a speech sound disorder or a cleft lip or palate can get Medicare rebates for speech pathology with a referral from their GP or a specialist.
These use the existing M10 Medicare items. They cover up to 8 assessment sessions and up to 20 treatment sessions in total (until age 25), with a rebate of $87.25 per session. You can use them as well as a GP care plan, just not on the same day.
You'll receive a receipt after each session. You can then claim your rebate through your Medicare app or website.
NDIS
I see NDIS participants who are self managed or plan managed. See NDIS speech therapy for more.
Private health insurance
If your extras cover includes speech pathology, you can claim with your fund. You'll receive a receipt after each session. You can then claim your rebate through your private health insurance app or website.
Is speech therapy bulk billed?
Not usually. You pay the full fee on the day and can then claim a rebate through either Medicare (with an eligible GP referral) or your private health insurance, depending on your cover. You can't claim both for the same session. The rebate covers part of the fee, and you pay the remaining amount.
