Introducing Purple Playspace

Engaging, highly interactive and fun workshops that use movement and drama as powerful mediums through which to explore embodiment of the Zones of Emotional Regulation, the importance of shared empathy and navigating challenging social situations that arise at school.

Facilitated by performing arts teachers and qualified therapist/counsellors, we use focused drama games, role-play and scene-work based on students' recent lived experiences in the playground or classroom to encourage deep connection and understanding amongst peers.

How does it work?

The program is offered as a minimum of 3-session blocks (either over 3 consecutive weeks or during one half-day block). Each session builds upon the last, allowing for creation of a common language, secure framework and a trusting group dynamic / safe space to emerge.

Session 1: Noticing & naming our own feelings: embodying the Zones of Emotional Regulation
Session 2: How to move between zones and understanding empathy
Session 3: Acting out zone scenes: students offer real-life examples of challenging situations they have recently experienced at school and are directed by facilitators to act out these scenes, followed by group discussion and re-enactments around how the actors in those scenes could have acted with more empathy; students also have the opportunity to brainstorm strategies around getting back to the Green Zone after such events. These scenes are directed with a deep sense of compassion and non-judgement by the facilitator.

Please Note: Due to the nature of Purple Playspace workshops, we advise that a staff member/teacher be available to check in with students post session in the event that a student would like to debrief about any big feelings that came up during the workshop.

How can you keep the Playspace alive?

We want to make sure you have a plan for maintaining the meaningful gains made throughout the workshop. We can help you achieve this through the following 2 options:

Option 1: We visit your school and facilitate ongoing group check-in sessions similar to Session 3 where students will have the opportunity to work through social challenges that have recently occurred at school.

Option 2: We support the staff member who observed us deliver all three sessions of the program to be able to run check-in sessions themselves, which can be used by that staff member as a way of facilitating future discussions and navigating potential resolutions for social challenges amongst students.
Includes: one supported supervision session where we observe and support the teacher whilst they lead zone scenes themselves, followed by a 1 hr zoom supervision session at their discretion. All necessary resources to run check- in sessions are provided.
Please Note: This staff member needs to have observed Purple Playspace qualified facilitators running sessions 1, 2 & 3 prior to directing zone scenes themselves.
